Botanical Description

Selected for its dramatic dark pseudostem, Musa balbisiana 'Thai Black' is a towering ornamental banana that develops deep purple-black coloration as it matures in strong light. Broad green leaves rise above the nearly black trunk, creating a bold architectural focal point for tropical landscapes and large patio containers. This cultivar is grown primarily for ornamental value rather than dependable fruit production. Available in a 1-gallon or 3-gallon nursery pot, or as a freshly lifted bare-root division; bare-root foliage may be trimmed for safer shipping. Light: Grows best in full sun to partial shade. Strong light promotes the darkest pseudostem coloration. Water: Keep consistently moist during active growth, allowing only the soil surface to begin drying between deep waterings.
