Gloriosa superba

A tuberous climber crowned with reflexed red-and-yellow tepals, Gloriosa superba turns each bloom into a living flame. This specimen was photographed in active summer growth at our St. Petersburg nursery, where Florida’s long warm season supports vigorous climbing growth. Leaf tips extend into tendrils that grasp nearby supports. All parts of the plant, especially the tubers, are highly toxic if ingested.
